The Mid-Island Brewers won both ends of a doubleheader against the Layritz Monarchs last Saturday, but the two games were as different as two wins can be.

The Brewers coasted to an 11-2 win over the expansion Monarchs in the opener behind an outstanding pitching performance by Jordan Frost.

Frost threw a season-high 95 pitches, striking out 10 batters over six innings, and Owen Ketch led the way offensively, going 2-for-3 with an RBI triple that broke the game wide open in the sixth.

The Monarchs caught the Brewers by surprise in the second. Up 4-0 going into the fifth inning after four shutout innings and seven strikeouts from Hayden Plester, the Brewers looked to Alejandro Ortega to close out the final three innings. The Monarchs had other ideas as they struck for two runs in the bottom of the fifth. In the bottom of the seventh the Monarchs had the bases loaded with one out, the tying run at second base. Ortega stayed calm and induced a soft line drive that was caught by shortstop Zach Komst, who then tagged second for the game-ending double play.

Plester took home Player of the Week honours for a dominant two-way performance that saw him go 3-for-5 with four walks, three runs and three stolen bases from the leadoff spot, along with the dominant four innings he pitched in the second game.

The two wins improved the Brewers’ record to 9-3 just half a game back of the Layritz Reds. Their next two games are set for July 9 against the White Sox at Lambrick Park at noon and 3 p.m., followed by a twin bill at home against the Lambrick Royals on July 16.
