Julianna Kapteyn was named Senior Girls Athlete of the Year and shared the Sportsperson of the Year award as Duncan Christian School honoured its athletic achievements over the 2021-22 school year.

Kapteyn helped lead Duncan Christian’s senior girls volleyball and basketball teams to berths at the provincial championships, collecting countless all-star and Player of the Game awards along the way.

She shared the Sportsperson of the Year award with Anna Kempe, her co-coach with the junior girls volleyball team. Kapteyn was also a minor official for every sports season at DCS over the past five years, while Kempe designed the logos for the Island boys and girls volleyball championships that the school hosted, as well as assisting with many athletics-related tasks and organizing the staff/student mini soccer tournament at the end of the season. This was the second year in a row that Kempe has been named Sportsperson of the Year.

The Senior Boys Athlete of the Year award was shared by Jayden Croswell, Parker Terpstra and Connor Hengstler.

Croswell was an Island all-star in volleyball and basketball, as well as qualifying for the track and field provincials in shot put in his first year in the sport. Terpstra was also an Island all-star in volleyball and basketball and was the MVP of the Chargers volleyball, basketball, soccer and badminton teams. Hengstler played volleyball and basketball, helped referee basketball and coach track, and assisted in setting up a livestream system for volleyball. Hengstler also won DCS’s first-ever medal at provincials in track and field, placing third in shot put, and finished 13th in hammer throw.

The Junior Girls Athlete of the Year was Sydney Dollman, who played key roles on the senior girls volleyball and basketball teams, earning Player of the Game honours at basketball provincials in Kelowna. She also assisted as an official and referee with Grade 7 tournaments.

The Junior Boys Athlete of the Year was Ethan Mitchell. A member of the junior boys volleyball team and both the junior and senior basketball teams, Mitchell has also refereed elementary and high school basketball and done other officiating at tournaments and games.

“All of these athletes and sportspeople have been excellent servant leaders at school, in regular student life and in athletics,” DCS athletic director Tom Veenstra said. “They have been willing to put the time into developing their individual and team skills, but have also given back to the athletic program through countless hours of coaching, officiating and minor officiating. We will definitely miss the Grade 12’s; they have been great role models and blessings. Ethan and Sydney are superb examples of athletes that will carry the tradition of exemplary talent and service.”
