Cowichan teams finish third at Buckskin tournament

Cowichan teams finished third in both the women’s and men’s divisions at the 49th annual Cowichan Buckskin Soccer Tournament on the Mother’s Day weekend.

The highly competitive tournament drew 10 teams for the women’s draw and 16 for the men’s side.

The women’s championship was won by Musqueam over Squamish on penalty kicks, while Cowichan FC beat the Alert Bay 96ers for the bronze medal.

Musqueam’s Chelsea Charlie was named tournament MVP and her teammate Jade Campbell was named best goalkeeper, while Squamish teammates Brittany Harry and Lacey Baker were selected as best offensive and defensive players, respectively.

Charlie, Campbell, Harry and Baker were named to the tournament all-star team along with Cowichan’s Mariah Thomas and Madison Jack Alert Bay’s Linda Jones and Tianna Walkus, Squamish’s Katrina Cook, and Musqueam’s Jaime Holmes and Lucy Louie.

In the men’s championship match, Kingcome defeated Musqueam, while the Cowichan Eagles beat Mount Currie for third place.

Kingcome swept all the men’s individual awards as Darian Atkinson was named MVP, Blaze Roberts was named top offensive player, Corey Swain was named best defensive player, and Dustin Price was picked as top goalie.

Atkinson, Roberts and Swain were also named to the all-star team, along with Cowichan’s Henry James and Bryden Sampson, Mount Currie’s Tyrone Stager, Musqueam’s Peter Cooper, Cyler Point and Jevin Hillis, and Kingcome’s Randy Walkus and Joel Harry.
