Busy CWFL week includes big upset

Crew and Ravens both pick up two wins

A busy week in the Cowichan Women’s Football League featured a slate of seven games over separate days, including a major upset.

Both the Crew and the Ravens won twice and lost once over the stretch, the Crew suffering their first loss of the season.

The week began with two games last Wednesday as the Crew beat the Ravens 36-8 and the Storm sank the Wild 45-6.

Marilou Sullivan led the Crew with two touchdowns. Kerynne Bain also scored on a 40-yard run and added a convert, Janelle Mould scored and chipped in with two interceptions, Kat Owens had the team’s other touchdown, and Nenagh McCulloch had two sacks. Jamie Russell replied for the Ravens with a touchdown and a convert, and Dana Thorne added a rouge.

Caitlin Evans paved the Storm with four touchdowns, while Kristen Labao scored twice and added a convert, Chelsea Morton also scored, and Julie Martin had one convert. Rachel Paddle led the Storm defence with two interceptions, while Labao, Jenn Elliot and Shylayne Davidson had one each. Piper Doerksen scored for the Wild, and Sue Glenn and Jeannine Gaudreau recorded interceptions.

The Ravens bounced back from their Wednesday loss with a 32-7 win over the Blue Steel Brew, while the Crew picked up a forfeit win over the Wild, who couldn’t field enough players for a full game.

Rikki Wylie had three touchdowns for the Ravens, and Jamie Russell and Lonnie-Lee Peter also scored, while Ashley Gait and Lauren James had one convert apiece. On defence, Becki Paterson had three sacks, and Russell added an interception. Michaela Peet played rusher for BSB for the first time and excelled with three sacks. Kara Espeseth scored the team’s lone touchdown, and Michelle Nederlof kicked for a rouge.

The Crew’s season-long winning streak finally came to an end on Sunday with a 13-0 loss to BSB. Jessica May and Monni Savory scored touchdowns for BSB and Heidi Haslan had a convert, while Kirbee Crisp led the defence with three sacks and Haslam and Savory had two each. Wilhelmina Toews had an interception for the Crew.

Also on Sunday, the Ravens beat the Wild 45-12, and the Law quieted the Storm 33-0.

Brittany Williams, Barb Smith and Autumn Cooper each scored twice for the Ravens and Becki Paterson had one touchdown The Wild answered back with touchdowns from Rhiannon Kemmler and Kerri McKelvie.

Wendy Charles led the Law with three touchdowns, while Shelley Hodgins and Leanne Closson also scored. Hodgins, Toni Williams and Deanne Garside added converts. On defence, Garside, Jaimie Olson and Kim Scafe had interceptions, and Rachel Hastings had a sack. Rachel Pugh had a sack and an interception for the Storm, and Kristen Labao added a pick.
