Regional district should take over all garbage collection

Your article Aug. 16 indicated that there is a 15 per cent contamination rate in the CVRD recycle totes and that the CVRD will be performing audits to crack down on contamination.

I would be interested to know if there are higher contamination rates in areas where residents are required to pay a private operator to pick up garbage. I have seen people putting trash in their totes, rather than pay extra for an extra garbage bag.

I think that garbage collection should be the responsibility of the regional district and that a flat rate should be charged per household by the district for garbage collection. This could reduce people ‘hiding’ garbage in the ‘free’ recycling pickup and reduce expensive diversion of entire loads of recyclables being diverted to landfills and the region facing financial penalties.
