Many don’t know when left lane rules apply

The flip side of Tim Schewe’s article about slow drivers not moving over is drivers who are misinformed about when the rule applies.

The relevant part of the Motor Vehicle Act states:

When drivers must not use the left most lane:

- the speed limit is at least 80 km/h and the actual speed is at least 50 km/h

In other words, it DOES NOT APPLY in slower speed zones or when congestion slows traffic flow.

It also states that the above rule DOES NOT APPLY when:

- passing another vehicle

- allowing traffic to merge

- preparing for a left turn

- passing an official vehicle stopped on the side of or on the roadway

From my experience, many drivers are not familiar with the subtleties of the rule. That indignant tailgater behind you just may be an ill-informed tailgater.
