NZEV proposal a no-brainer

Dear North Cowichan mayor and council:

It’s sure heartening to hear pro-business councillors Bruce Findlay and Tek Manhas appear to finally realize the urgency of protecting North Cowichan’s threatened environment — while boosting our struggling economy.

Their seeming eco-epiphany is found in the March 21, 2024 Citizen. It details council’s laudable decision to consider allowing neighbourhood zero-emission vehicles in our municipality.

The prescient NZEV proposal by Chemainus resident Dave Haberman seems a no-brainer considering North Cowichan’s cogent environmental bylaws, green-leaning official community plan, and our Climate Action & Energy Plan.

Councillors, and environmental manager David Preikshot, must continue seeking, mulling and welcoming green-energy proposals to buoy local jobs and tax revenues while saving our ecology.

However, why has it taken more than year for Findlay and Manhas to open their minds about supporting environmental safeguards rather than purely promoting business interests including continued municipal logging and urban-sprawl development?

Residents expect and deserve council’s co-operation regarding economic benefits of green, smart growth.

Yours in smart economic growth,

Peter W. Rusland

North Cowichan
