It was disappointing news this week for Cowichan Valley book lovers, as the organizers of the Garden House Charity Book sale announced it would be cancelled this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Due to uncertainties surrounding the pandemic, the annual October book sale will not take place this year at Bonner School,” a press release from Jim and Jackie Barker said. “The sale is planned to resume in 2021. Book donations will continue to be accepted. For more information please visit www.gardenhousefoundation.wordpress.com.”
Grants from the permanent fund will be given before December as usual to Cowichan Family Life, Cowichan Women Against Violence and the Duncan and District SPCA.
“Thanks again to everyone who has supported the sale in the past,” the Barkers said. “Best wishes to you all for a safe and healthy year ahead.”

Attention art lovers: new window displays are coming to Imagine That! in downtown Duncan.
The Cowichan Artisans: Capsule Collection opens Sept. 25 and runs until Oct. 30.
“The Cowichan Artisans are a group of professionals who operate galleries, studios, and work full-time at their craft,” said a press release from Imagine That! “Members create a wide range of work: fine furniture, pottery, paintings, metal sculptures, jewelry, felting, collage, stone mosaics, wooden bowls. Each work is original in concept and design, a labour of love reflecting the highest standards.”
Visit these artists on their open studio weekend, coming Nov. 7-8.
The other window opens Oct. 2 and runs until Oct. 30. and will feature Doreen Green: Paintings and Pastels.
“Doreen Green was born in Vancouver, but has lived most of her adult life in Duncan,” said Imagine That! “She began her education in art under the Nanaimo BC College of Art program, as well as under private tutelage. She has been self-taught in the medium of pastel. A member of the Federation of Canadian Artists and the Society of Canadian Artists, her paintings have been exhibited in galleries in Toronto, Montreal, and western Canada.”
