Dr. Thomas Gerald Egan, known to everyone as Gerry, passed away peacefully in the Nanaimo Regional General Hospital, on September 30, 2008.

Gerry was born in St Helens, Lancashire, England on March 29, 1933. He was granted a scholarship to the local Grammar School and went on to study medicine at Manchester University, specializing in Gynecology and Obstetrics.

In 1968, Gerry immigrated to Canada, firstly taking up a position at a practice in Sechelt, BC and then moving to what should have been a temporary post in Lake Cowichan, where he met his wife Bertie. In his love for his wife, the mountains and the river, Gerry knew he had found the place he wanted to spend the rest of his life. Although other opportunities arose, Gerry made the decision to work as a GP in Lake Cowichan as he felt his experience and his expertise would be more beneficial to serve the people of his beloved Cowichan Valley. He was often called on by other Doctors and Specialists in an emergency to assist in the care of their patients and in his heart he continued his passion to be a doctor, until his passing.

Gerry is survived by his wife Bertie and sister Elsie (in England), children, Debbie (George), John, Ros (Pete), Susan, Kate (Paul), Mary and his grandchildren Ellie, Amie, Kimberly, Lucas, Matthew, Kaine, Beck, Ayden, Mack, Dana and Jett. Also his dearest friend and chess buddy Harry and his lovely wife Helen.

The Celebration of his life will be held at the Lake Cowichan Community Hall on Friday October 10 at 1:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Lake Cowichan Food Bank in his memory:
