It was nearing the end of the school year when Judy Nikirk last sounded the alarm about the increase of traffic speeding along Telegraph Road near Bench Elementary School.
As summer came and went, it wasn’t as much of a concern as the schoolchildren were not around. But, two months into the new school year, Nikirk is back at it, this time, not only hoping drivers will adhere to the posted speed limit, but also calling out the thieves who have decided it’s a good idea to abscond with the neighbourhood’s new “slow down” signage.
“We took it upon ourselves to have some signs made up,” Nikirk explained. “We had six of those made up. We put them out on Sunday and three of them are already gone,” she said Wednesday morning.
The $126 bill was split between a group of neighbours, thinking it would be money well spent.
“Honest to God, I’m getting so fed up with these people. We put them up strategically so they were up along Department of Highway signposts and they cut the zap straps and stole the signs. Three of them.”
“Please return the stolen signs,” she said.
Nikirk contacted the RCMP but realistically isn’t expecting much more than a returned phone call.
The ordeal has left her questioning people’s thought processes.
“Nobody cares about anything anymore,” she said. “We’ve tried several things. Nobody wants to help, nobody cares, and it’s kids for goodness sakes. Once somebody’s child gets hit, then somebody might do something about it. But why wait?”
