Replacement banners coming to spruce up Lake Cowichan for tourist season

There’s a chance that some banners painted by local children will also be displayed.

Lake Cowichan’s colourful lamp post banners greet motorists driving into and through town but they don’t last forever.

The town’s parks, recreation, and culture committee wrestled with the subject of replacement for some time Tuesday, but in the end decided to order new ones right away.

A top priority, Coun. Day said was “seeing something in place before the tourist season.”

Coun. Carolyne Austin suggested council could get in touch with arts teachers at the school to see about students painting some banners to put up. This kind of banner has been used before in Lake Cowichan.

Coun. Tim McGonigle wondered if the town could “take into consideration that it’s the 150th anniversary of Canada’s confederation this year.”

Works superintendent Nagi Rizk suggested that possibly some local businesses might like to become involved in sponsoring banners.

Day replied that both Austin’s and Rizk’s ideas would require “some time and energy” if they were to happen this year.

“We are in the season when the shops that make those banners are really busy,” Rizk pointed out. “We need to get on this if we are going to order some.”

McGonigle suggested that new banners be ordered and then, since Austin was interested in getting something going with the schools, any that were made there could be rotated in with the others.
