The City of Duncan will address the possible amalgamation of the city and North Cowichan at tonight’s (June 5) committee of the whole meeting.

The amalgamation of the two municipalities has been recommended by the Citizens’ Assembly.

The assembly’s final report was presented at a special meeting of the Duncan and North Cowichan elected officials on May 23.

Staff are recommending that the committee support the recommendation and that a referendum be held on amalgamation during the 2018 municipal elections.

Staff are also recommending that the committee appoint two Duncan city councillors to a joint amalgamation information working group to make recommendations to both councils on a process for developing sufficient information for a binding referendum question on amalgamation.

The meeting begins at 6 p.m.
