The Canadian Red Cross branch in Duncan will be holding a meeting on June 23 in an effort to recruit more volunteers.

The Canadian Red Cross is reducing its office hours due to the lack of volunteers.

Effective immediately, the Red Cross at 5855 York Rd. will be reducing its hours to Monday to Wednesday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

But Red Cross spokeswoman June Hruby said the office will be able to keep its doors open longer if it can find more volunteers.

The office provides aids such as wheelchairs, walkers, bath seats, benches, commodes, toilet seats, crutches and canes to people with medical issues.

“Duncan is not usually a hard spot to find volunteers, but some times we lose a bunch at once and there a lot on holidays at this time of year,” Hruby said.

“We need two volunteers on every shift to help deal with our clients to run the office five days a week, which means that we meed to have 10 volunteers with a few spares to keep office hours Monday through Friday. We just don’t have those numbers right now.”

Hruby said there will be a volunteer information session on June 23 at the Red Cross office in Duncan starting at 11 a.m. for anyone interested in volunteering.

“It would be a good idea for people who plan to attend the meeting to call first so we will have some idea of how many to expect, but no one will be turned away,” Hruby said.
