The folks at Cowichan Community Policing and Crime Prevention are reminding the pedestrian and cycling public to be safe and be seen this winter as the daylight hours decrease.

Carol-Ann Rolls, community policing manager, issued a press release noting 43 per cent of all crashes with pedestrians happen between October and January.

“But it doesn’t have to be this way,” said the release. “Whether it’s taking a break from your phone or yielding the right-of-way, we all need to do our part to keep pedestrians safe.”

In B.C. 76 per cent of collisions involving pedestrians happen at intersections so it’s important for people to keep an eye out for vehicles turning when using a crosswalk. Crossing at a crosswalk is important, as is making eye contact with drivers to ensure they see you.

“Never assume that a driver sees you,” said the release.

Bright or reflective clothing and a flashlight make it easier to be seen. On rural roads, and streets without sidewalks, walk facing traffic so oncoming traffic can be seen.

The folks from community policing will be out at the Duncan lightup on Nov. 24, handing out reflectors and educating people about road safety. Free reflectors are also available at the Cowichan Community Policing Offices at 149 Canada Ave. while supplies last.
