What better way to celebrate than with song, and the Medford Singers are doing just that next weekend, celebrating Canada’s 150th anniversary with their friends in the Victoria Mendelssohn Choir.

What better way to celebrate than with song, and the Medford Singers are doing just that next weekend, celebrating Canada’s 150th anniversary with their friends in the Victoria Mendelssohn Choir.

The two groups will offer a musical tribute to our country, titled O Canada!- A Musical Journey May 27 and May 28 in Lake Cowichan and Duncan respectively.

“This rousing concert, conducted by Simon Leung and accompanied by Michael Gaudet and Curt Bergen will feature composers and music spanning the history of Canada,” said an email from Michele Jedwab of the Medford Singers. “There are works from a variety of genres and traditions that are uniquely Canadian.”

Some composers include Stan Rogers, Ian Tyson, James Rankin and Leonard Cohen.

Favourites include ‘Fare thee Well Love’ and ‘Hallelujah’, ‘Song for the Mira’ and ‘The Log Driver’s Waltz’.

“Something for everyone,” said Jedwab.

A few Mendelssohn favourites will also be sprinkled in for variety.

Each choir will perform their Canadian repertoire followed by a 70 voice massed choir presentation of choruses from Mendelssohn’s Elijah.

Up at the Lake, the Christian Fellowship Church, at 10 King George St. is the venue on Saturday, May 27 at 3 p.m.

Choir members from the Lake Cowichan area include Casey Van Dalen, Jane Sharpe, Dave Darling, Brad Bergen, Elvin Hedden, Candy Green, Carolyn Le Blanc, Tina Verch and Judith Quinlan and Irene Ridley.

In Duncan, the concert venue is Duncan United Church on Sunday, May 28 at 2 p.m.

Tickets are available from choir members, at Volume One Books for the Duncan concert and at Lake Cowichan Remax (81 Cowichan Lake Rd.) They are $17 in advance or $20 at the door. Children 12 and under are free.
