Calling all actors.

The Shawnigan Players will be holding auditions this week for their fall/winter production.

Erin Butler will direct either The Pillow Man by Martin McDonagh or East of Berlin by Hannah Moscovitch in early December.

Auditions will take place 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 27 at the Shawnigan Lake Community Centre and 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 29 at the Clements Centre (5856 Clements St.) in Duncan. All are welcome. For more information please email shawniganplayers@gmail.com

The Pillow Man requires two adult men and two other adults, either male or female.

The story follows Katurian, a writer of short stories that often depict violence against children, who has been arrested by two detectives, Ariel and Tupolski, because some of his stories resemble recent child murders.

When he hears that his brother Michal has confessed to the murders and implicated Katurian, he resigns himself to his execution but attempts to save his stories from destruction.

The setting is a nameless totalitarian state.

East of Berlin calls for two men, 25-ish and one woman, 25-ish.

In this play, a monologue given by Rudi with re-enactments shows how he has ended up in this desperate time and place: standing outside his father’s study, after an absence of seven years.

He left when he discovered that his father had been a doctor at Auschwitz before moving the family to Paraguay at the end of the Second World War.

Rudi thought he could escape the sins of his father, but they overwhelm him as he falls in love with a Jewish woman. However, Sarah refuses to be with the child of a Nazi, whatever else she may feel for him.
