The Cowichan power and Sail Squadron is hosting a boating safety event on May 11 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at Maple Bay Marina.
“The focus of the event is to be safe on the water,” said Sue Coleman, commander of the squadron in a press release. “With so many small boats, kayakers and paddle boarders looking to the water for fun this coming summer we are doing a display and demonstration of essential safety equipment. With $1,500 worth of safety equipment to be won by those attending, this family event should not be missed.”

The Cowichan Watershed Board is holding the next in their Speaker Series on Monday, May 13 and it’s all about Algae and Art: Ecosystem Fragility, Monitoring, and Community Response.
This free lecture by Dr. Dave Preikshot, which begins at 7 p.m., will address algae issues in the Cowichan watershed, with a hands-on art activity.
Preikshot is a fish biologist and Senior Environmental Specialist with the Municipality of North Cowichan. He’ll share his recent work on understanding local algae populations and their impacts on fish habitats.
People are invited to come early at 6:30 p.m. to take part in Project 84,000. This is the creation of a massive art installation to honour and memorialize the fish that died in the Cowichan River last summer. The event takes place at Vancouver Island University’s Cowichan Campus, in lecture hall 140.

Volume One Bookstore is presenting a multi-author event in Duncan on May 22 called Take a Read on the Wildside.
Authors Taryn Eyton (Backpacking on Vancouver Island), Collin Varner (50 Keystone Species of Flora & Fauna in BC) and John and Bea Dowd (Escape to Clayoqout Sound) are all bringing out new books about the natural world this spring. Each author will present their books with a short slide show as well as talk as a panel and field questions from the audience, time allowing. The evening will be hosted by local naturalist Genevieve Singleton.
“We are honoured to work with B.C. publishers, Heritage Group Distribution and Greystone Books to bring you this wonderful flourish of authors who write books on the natural world that surrounds us,” said Volume One in a press release.
The event will take place at Duncan United Church Hall at 246 Ingram St., with the doors opening at 6:30 p.m. and the event starting at 7 p.m. Tickets are $10 in advance at Volume One or in cash at the door.
